800 years of Guernsey charts and maps on display at the Priaulx Library.
The Priaulx Library’s rich collection of maps and charts of Guernsey will be on show to the public – many items for the first time - as part of the 1204 celebrations – from 27th May. The maps tell a fascinating story of Guernsey through the eyes of historians, mapmakers and surveyors, from very early charts through to the Armada maps of Lord Howard of Effingham, the beautiful Speed and Mercator images of the 16th and 17th centuries, and of course the Duke of Richmond map of 1787.
In addition to the exhibition, there will be access to CD-Rom, containing images of other maps and charts which complement the story of Guernsey through maps, going back to the 13th Century. It is hoped also to make Digimap available to the public during this period.
The exhibition provides a great opportunity for Islanders and visitors alike to see a unique collection of maps, which are not only beautiful in themselves, but which tell us so much about the changing face of Guernsey through the ages.
Guernsey on the Map will be open to the public during library hours (9.30-5pm Mon-Sat), and is free. School party and other group bookings will also be taken for day and evening visits. |
