Welcome to Guernsey on the Map

This is ‘Guernsey on the Map – How the world discovered the Bailiwick.’ An exhibition of maps dating from 1588 to 1859 at the Priaulx Library from 26 May to 2 October 2004.

The Priaulx Library is unique! It’s a modern public service within the trappings of a Victorian library, housed in a Georgian family home. It has an international reputation for local, family history and related studies of the Bailiwick of Guernsey, and its rich collections include

  • Books relating to the Bailiwick and Normandy Newspapers from 1791 to the present day
  • Maps and photographs
  • Paintings, prints and pictures
  • Letters, documents, diaries and manuscripts covering 600 years of local history
  • Extensive family history resources
  • The library also houses the impressive library of the founder Osmond De Beauvoir Priaulx, whose collection of books formed the core of the library’s holdings when the doors were first opened to the public in 1889. The Carel Toms Collection of Channel Islands photographs is an important record of Island life in the 20 th century.

Above all, the role of the Priaulx Library is to acquire, develop and make accessible to all collections of books and other material on Guernsey and the other Channel Islands.
