A Chart of the Islands of Jersey and Guernsey, Sark, Herm and Alderney: with the Adjacent Coast of France
Louis Stanislas D’Arcy De La Rochette, a cartographer and engraver, was active in London in association with the Bowles family and William Faden with whom he published a number of maps of America and Africa .
This is a very detailed nautical chart of the Channel Island archipelago. Coastal features and building that could act as landmarks are plainly shown together with the hours of High Water at New and Full Moon and the range of tides and the depth of water, etc.
The outline of the coast of Guernsey is still incorrect indicating that an accurate land survey was still outstanding. Despite the small area occupied by Guernsey on the chart as a whole, the amount of cartographic detail, both onshore and offshore, is very high. Information relating to the type of seabed - good ground, rotten ground and sandy ground is indicated together with large sandbanks in the area is clearly indicated.
