John Thomson’s New General Atlas of January 1 st, 1817 has a sheet of Remote British Isles . It includes Guernsey , Herm, Sark and Alderney ; Isle of Jersey; Isle of Man and the Isle of Wight . The plate was engraved by N R Hewitt, Tottenham Court Road.

Guernsey , Herm, Sark and Alderney are shown in a map of approximately 175mm square; the representation of Guernsey is therefore quite small. The map is actually a reproduction of one which first appeared in 1801, before the Braye du Valle was reclaimed, and not updated for this edition of the General Atlas.

t is not know what version Thomson used for his map of Guernsey , but is has a typically Mercator-like distortion in the south-west which is at odds with the superbly drawn Duke of Richmond Map which appeared in 1787.
